Spring in Salento

Anyone who thinks that the Salento is an area where only spend the summer, make a great error. In Salento, throughout the course of the year you can appreciate the beauty and the traditions of this land, however, also spending figures definitely contained compared to the summer, also considering the many cheap flights to Bari and Brindisi, and links to almost all Italians airports.

This spring, for example, is a perfect season to visit the Salento without having to endure the hot, sunny days, as well as the abundant flow of tourists. The temperature in spring is mild and pleasant, the sun illuminates the days till late at night and you can enjoy peaceful walks in the countryside and or between the characteristic towns of Salento, where the history and culture of this wonderful land releases secrets and mysteries preserved in time.

In fact, the area is teeming villages and historic towns to get lost in alleys, palaces and ancient mills … Mirror, for example is one of the most beautiful towns in Italy, and owes its name to piles of stones which can still be seen here and there, they are called “specchie”, used as a defense or as watchtowers against potential enemies.

Particularly rich in castles is the town of Tricase, that within its territory has three of these structures: the Baronial Castle of Trane (Tutino), built in the late sixteenth century by Don Luigi Trane carparo yellowish and local stone; the Depressed Castle, currently owned by the Baron Riccardo Winspeare, built in the fourteenth century; Castle of Chevron, built in the thirteenth century.

Among the most famous are the Palazzo Comi Lucugnano, home of the poet Girolamo Comi and currently houses the Provincial Library “Girolamo Comi” and “Museum Comi” where the writings of the poet Salento are preserved; Licari Palace and Palazzo Ducale in Alessano; Ciardo Palace, birthplace of the painter Vincenzo Ciardo and Palazzo Daniel, elegant aristocratic villa in Art Nouveau style in 1863, Gagliano del Capo.

The agro Salento is almost everywhere cultivated, and the arboreal vegetation is mostly made up of expanses of olive trees, twisted trunks and large. Apart from the aforementioned trees, the vegetation is also made from prickly pear cactus, which grows spontaneously both inside and along the coast, which already begins to bloom in mid-January. In the spring, the land under the olive trees, the edge of the paths and roads, as well as the interstices of the stone walls, is covered with flowers in an explosion of colors ranging from intense yellow of wild buttercups, to purple thistle flowers up the red of the poppies.
